Alex Elder joined Severn Trent in April 2001 to head the newly created Metering operation in the UK, embracing manufacture, design and installation contracting. Soon after, his responsibility was expanded to include the global metering business and now serves as Managing Director, Severn Trent Metering Services in Chesterfield, England.
Prior to joining Severn Trent, Alex spent 11 years managing the UK operations of a leading German engineering group, Still GmbH. Under his leadership, the fledgling business became a leading player in the material handling field, covering many business sectors including some of Europe's largest industrial warehousing projects. Alex spent most of his earlier career with the TI Group in England, initially in market research, then going on to international sales and business development. He speaks French and German in addition to his native English. In his role of promoting a global business strategy, he draws upon his experience of organic business growth through international sales and joint venture participation.
Elder has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Edinburgh University with post-graduate qualifications in Industrial Administration and Accounting from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.
Furmidge is Business Development Director for Elster SmartMeter. He holds a PhD in flow measurement and instrumentation and has over 15 years' experience in the water industry. Formerly a research officer at Cranfield University, he was instrumental in developing the world's first "no moving parts" domestic water meter.
