]]> The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation has announced that all of the country's domestic water meters are to be replaced with Severn Trent Services' SmartMeters.

At a press conference in Qatar, the Corporation’s water distribution manager Abdul Monaom Darwish said that this decision was taken because of the corporation’s desire to go high-tech. He added that the corporation’s aim is to provide customers with the maximum satisfaction through the best possible service.

The metering project is worth QR15million (cUS$4million). Severn Trent Services has already installed 8,000 meters over the three years that it has been working in the country. So far, contracts have been awarded for the purchase of 14,000 meters.

]]> The Severn Trent Services SM 100 Domestic SmartMeter™ is being installed in conjunction with the SmartReader™ low power radio monitoring system to ensure a prestigious new city apartment block is able to enjoy hassle-free water meter reading and neat cable and wireless installation.

The 176 luxury apartments are sited within a refurbished Victorian hospital and are of an extremely high specification. It was therefore felt that the inductive touch pad system normally used to remotely read water meters would be inappropriate, as this would have involved running long lengths of cable from each individual water meter to a communal reading point.

The Ajusta system offers various combinations of lid and surface box options and can come with a concentric meter manifold and pre-installed stop tap and anti-shear torque unit to ensure there is minimal risk of damaging the manifold during installation procedures. ]]> A converted mill in Leicestershire was recently the centre of attention for a three-month trial and evaluation of radio technology used for reading water meters, undertaken by Severn Trent Water.

The mill conversion, plus an additional apartment building and some 150 residential properties in the East Midlands, ranging from starter homes to four and five bedroomed executive houses, were chosen to demonstrate the diversity of dwelling types where radio meter reading can be a practical alternative to other methods.

]]> The value of water metering technology as a tool to detect and manage leakage was highlighted at a recent seminar staged at Claridge’s Hotel, London, by Severn Trent Services.

The seminar, attended by some one hundred industry professionals first heard from Michael Saunders, Director of Consumer Affairs at OFWAT who put the issues of metering and leakage in the context of the regulatory framework.

This theme was endorsed by George Archibald and Martin Kane, both of Severn Trent Water and Dr Bryan Franklin of ABB who, respectively spoke of the implications for the level of leakage on customers’ underground supply pipes, the link between leakage performance, operational input and investment in mains renewal and how, in practical terms, water metering is revolutionising the methods used in water flow management and thereby improving the quality and availability of data which can be used to identify problems earlier and therefore significantly reduce costs.

]]> Severn Trent Services have been awarded a groundbreaking contract in Egypt for the supply and installation of an automatic water metering system for both domestic and commercial applications. The value of the initial contract is US$ 0.75 million and it is hoped that this will lead to an expanded programme covering the entire national water network.

]]> Severn Trent Services officially presented its millionth ‘Ajusta’ boundary box to Carl Taylor and Ian Whittaker of Yorkshire Water Services Ltd at its Chesterfield headquarters last week. The presentation marks a high point in an extremely successful three year contract, won earlier this year, to supply Yorkshire Water Services with 90,000 of the Ajusta units and guard tube boundary boxes for external meters.

]]> Co-operation with a South Korean company will open up new markets for the Severn Trent Services’ solid state SmartMeter. Under the agreement, recently concluded between Severn Trent Services and Yu Cheun of South Korea, the proven SmartMeter technology can now be incorporated into metering flows in large bore pipelines. At the same time, Yu Cheun’s experience in its home market will increase the potential for further expansion of the use of SmartMeters for domestic metering in South Korea.

Announcing the agreement, Alex Elder Managing Director of Severn Trent Services, said: “SmartMeters have always been state-of-the-art in domestic flow measurement and now companies will be able to monitor flows on their main network systems to the same high levels of accuracy.”
